Urban ecology

Introduction by Joe Bibby

Teacher's notes:
This day was concerned with investigating the Burgess Model and its' applicability to Liverpool. Students designed a transect recording sheet (opens a word document) and worked in small groups to plan a suitable method for recording data. We identified suitable locations along a transect (word document) using a mapping program. The fieldwork took us from the inner city area of Wapping to Dingle (the "Holy land") Aigburth Garston and Speke. It is fair to say that the results did not entirely match our expectations, especially the Garston area where the decline in the local dockyard is particularly evident.

In the evening we discussed our findings. We all wrote poems about either Granby or the Albert dock. Some of these were recorded at the appropriate location the following day before we returned home.
